Zamość lies in south-east Poland close to the Ukrainian border with over 66 thousands inhabitants. Before the war, when Poland lied more than 200 kiolmeters to the east, it was located in circa south-central Poland with more than 20 thousands inhabitants, more than half of them Jews.
Zamos was erected by Hetman Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) Kanzler of Poland on his private estate, and planned by Architect Bernardo Morandi of Padua (1540-1600) and inaugurated on 1580.
The remnants of the Kehile were transfered to the close Bełżec Extermination Camp on April 1942, thus ending an over 340 years of magnificent Jewish existance.
